Acupuncture in Physiotherapy
If acupuncture is recommended, your physiotherapist will explain the process and gain your consent before beginning. Fine, single use, sterile needles are gently inserted into specific points on the body often around areas of pain or tension and are usually left in place for 10–35 minutes.
During the treatment you will be asked to remain still, not disturb the needles and ask for assistance if you have any concerns.
Following the treatment the needles will be gently removed and disposed of into a sharps box.
Intended benefits of treatment
- Reduction of pain
- Alleviation of muscle spasm and tension

- Induction of local and general relaxation
- Promotion of general well-being
- Improvement of sleep pattern
